What's After the Movie
Robert "Bobby" Gillespie (born 22 June 1961) is a Scottish musician, singer‑songwriter and multi‑instrumentalist best known as the frontman of the influential alternative rock band Primal Scream. Born in the Springburn district of Glasgow and later moving to Mount Florida, he attended King’s Park Secondary School before immersing himself in the burgeoning indie scene of the early 1980s. Gillespie’s early career saw him working as a roadie for Altered Images, playing bass in The Wake, and joining The Jesus and Mary Chain as a minimalist drummer whose kit consisted of only a snare and a floor tom, a style inspired by Velvet Underground’s Moe Tucker. After contributing to the seminal debut album Psychocandy (1985), he left the band to focus full‑time on Primal Scream, a group he had co‑founded in 1982 with guitarist Jim Beattie. The band’s early releases earned cult status, but it was the 1991 Screamadelica—produced with Andrew Weatherall and Hugo Nicolson—that catapulted them into mainstream recognition, blending acid‑house beats with psychedelic rock and winning the inaugural Mercury Music Prize in 1992. Over the ensuing decades Gillespie steered Primal Scream through stylistic shifts from hard‑rock on Give Out But Don’t Give Up to the aggressive electronic textures of XTRMNTR (2000) and the darker tones of Chaosmosis (2016). In 2021 he released Utopian Ashes, a collaborative album with Jehnny Beth, and the same year published his memoir Tenement Kid, a vivid account of his Glasgow upbringing, punk discovery, and artistic evolution. Aside from music, Gillespie has contributed to projects such as New Order’s box set Retro and guest‑appeared on tracks with CSS and Lol Tolhurst, showcasing his versatility across genres. He remains a outspoken public figure, known for his candid political views and support for Scottish independence, while continuing to influence new generations of musicians.
