Bill Hickman was an American stunt driver, actor, and stunt coordinator whose career spanned three decades of Hollywood’s most iconic car chases. Born William Hickman on 1921‑01‑25 in Los Angeles County, California, he entered the motion‑picture industry in the early 1940s, initially taking bit parts in films such as Salute to the Marines (1943) and The Beginning or the End (1947). By the mid‑1950s he had become a trusted stunt performer, famously serving as a driver‑friend to James Dean, towing Dean’s legendary 550 Spyder “Little Bastard” and driving the station wagon that arrived at the scene of Dean’s tragic 1955 crash. Hickman later recalled the harrowing moment he cradled Dean’s lifeless body, a memory that haunted him for years. His early work included dangerous motorcycle stunts on The Wild One and an extra role in Dean’s debut feature Fixed Bayonets! (1951). Throughout the 1950s and 1960s he accumulated countless uncredited appearances in TV series like Bat Masterson and The Man from U.N.C.L.E., while honing his reputation for high‑risk driving.

The pinnacle of Hickman’s on‑screen fame arrived with the 1968 classic Bullitt, where he portrayed one of the hit men behind the wheel of a black 1968 Dodge Charger, launching the vehicle over San Francisco’s steep hills in a sequence that remains a benchmark for stunt choreography. He repeated his daring performance in The French Connection (1971), stunt‑coordinating and driving a 1971 Pontiac LeMans at speeds up to 90 mph through real traffic, and later in The Seven‑Ups (1973) where his own idea for a crash homage to Jayne Mansfield was executed. Beyond these highlights, Hickman performed the iconic Mustang jump in Diamonds Are Forever (1971) and contributed to Patton (1970) as George C. Scott’s driver. A real‑life hero, he once used his stunt‑driving skills to chase a bank robber on the Ventura Freeway in 1963, helping police apprehend the felon. Hickman died of cancer on 1986‑02‑24 in Indio, California, leaving a legacy of fearless performance that shaped the language of cinematic car action.
