He began his career in French cinema in the 1960s, collaborating with renowned directors of the French New Wave such as Jean-Luc Godard, Jacques Rivette and Eric Rohmer. Schroeder made his mark by producing notable films like The Bakery Girl of Monceau (1962), Six in Paris (1965), and Celine and Julie Go Boating (1974) before transitioning to directorial roles in films like More (1969), La Vallée (1972) and Barfly (1987). Schroeder’s directing prowess has not gone unnoticed; his film Barfly was nominated for the Palme d'Or and his drama Reversal of Fortune (1990) earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Director. Schroeder has directed several big-budget Hollywood films including Single White Female (1992), Kiss of Death (1995), Desperate Measures (1998) and Murder by Numbers (2002). He has even made appearances on screen in Beverly Hills Cop III (1994), Mars Attacks! (1996) and The Darjeeling Limited (2007). Despite branching into mainstream Hollywood, Schroeder continues to create smaller, more niche films. His revolutionary work in film has left a lasting imprint in the industry and his influence can be seen across generations of filmmakers.
