Barbara Harris

Barbara Harris (born August 25, 1935 in Evanston, Illinois, United States) was an American actress celebrated for her versatility on stage and screen. She first gained national attention as a founding member of the improvisational ensemble The Second City in Chicago, where her quick wit and natural comedic timing earned her a reputation as a trailblazer for women in comedy. After moving to New York, Harris became a standout on Broadway, delivering a breakthrough performance in The Apple Tree (1966) opposite Alan Alda, earning a Tony nomination, and later winning critical acclaim for her role in The Good Doctor (1971). Her transition to film was marked by the iconic role of Miriam in the 1975 cult classic Family Plot, the final Hitchcock film, where she displayed a blend of vulnerability and sly humor that would become her trademark.

Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, Harris appeared in a string of memorable movies such as A Thousand Clowns (1965), Nashville (1975), and Freaky Friday (1976), where her portrayal of the eccentric mother Helen was both tender and wildly comedic, earning her a Golden Globe nomination. She also delivered powerful dramatic work in The Secret of My Success (1987) and lent her voice to animated projects, showcasing her adaptability. Off‑screen, Harris was known for her long‑standing partnership with director George Roy Hill, whom she married in 1963; their collaboration produced several notable projects before their 1975 divorce. She later married producer Christopher Finch in 1979, a union that lasted until 2000. Despite never having children, Harris devoted much of her later life to teaching acting workshops and supporting charitable causes, leaving an indelible mark on both stage and screen until her passing in August 2018.
