Born Asa Maxwell Thornton Farr Butterfield on 1 April 1997, Asa Butterfield is known for his remarkable roles in the film and television industry. Since beginning his career as a young child, his talent was evident and saw him gaining recognition early on for his lead performance in the historical drama The Boy in Striped Pyjamas (2008). Prolific throughout the 2010s, he went on to headline several films such as the adventures Hugo (2011), the war science fiction Ender's Game (2013), X+Y (2014), and Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children (2016). Between 2019 and 2023, Butterfield was featured in the Netflix comedy-drama series Sex Education.

Butterfield got his acting start at age seven at the Young Actors Theatre Islington, eventually securing minor roles in 2006 and 2007 dramas. In 2008, he not only had a guest role in a series, but also played the lead role in The Boy in the Striped Pajamas at just ten years old. Numerous roles followed, from Mordred in Merlin and Norman Green in Nanny McPhee and the Big Bang to the titular character in Martin Scorsese's Hugo. His performance in the British drama X+Y saw him critically acclaimed and nominated for Best Actor in BIFA. In recent years, Butterfield switched focus to Netflix series Sex Education, which has been positively received, and he also enjoys making music and gaming competitively.
