Anne Wiazemsky

Anne Wiazemsky was a French actress and novelist whose artistic life spanned the turbulent era of the 1960s French New Wave and later turned to celebrated literary work. Born on 14 May 1947 in Berlin to Yvan Wiazemsky, a French diplomat of Russian princely descent, and Claire Mauriac, the daughter of Nobel‑prize‑winning writer François Mauriac, she spent her childhood moving between Geneva, Caracas and Paris, attending the École Sainte‑Marie de Passy before stepping onto the cinematic stage at the age of eighteen. Her breakthrough came when she was cast as Marie in Robert Bresson’s Au hasard Balthazar (1966), a role that earned the film multiple awards at the Venice Film Festival and secured her place in the canon of classic cinema; Bresson’s austere direction and her quiet intensity were praised by contemporary critics, including Jean‑Luc Godard, who later became both her husband and artistic collaborator. After marrying Godard in 1967, Wiazemsky appeared in several of his provocative films such as La Chinoise, Week End and One Plus One, embodying the spirit of political rebellion that defined the period. Though their marriage dissolved formally in 1979, the partnership left a lasting imprint on her creative sensibility. In the 1980s she began to write, publishing award‑winning novels like Canines (1993) and Une poignée de gens (1998), the latter receiving the Grand Prix du roman de l’Académie française. Her literary oeuvre frequently reflected on her cinematic experiences, most notably in Jeune fille (2007), a fictionalized memoir of her time on Au hasard Balthazar. Wiazemsky also contributed to screenwriting, co‑authoring the script for Claire Denis’s U.S. Go Home (1994) and directing documentary projects for French television. A signatory of the 1971 Manifesto of the 343, she publicly supported reproductive rights in a period when abortion was illegal in France. She died of breast cancer on 5 October 2017 in Paris, leaving behind a legacy that bridges film and literature, marked by intellectual depth, artistic courage, and a lifelong commitment to cultural expression.
