Ann Louise Maria Petrern, born on May 25, 1954 in Västerås, Sweden, is a celebrated Swedish actress whose career spans over four decades. Growing up as the daughter of Folke Petrern, an executive at Svenska Metallverken, and Maud Jacobsson, she entered the world of performance through formal training at the Malmö Theatre Academy between 1976 and 1979. Shortly after graduating, Petrern made her professional debut and by 1979 she had begun a prolific journey that continues to this day, marked by both screen and stage excellence. In 1988 she secured a permanent position with the Stockholm City Theatre, where her first notable role was in Staffan Göthe's production A Stuffed Dog, establishing her reputation as a versatile stage presence. Petrern’s film career took off with a memorable turn as the long‑suffering wife in the 1992 coming‑of‑age drama Night of the Orangutan, a performance that showcased her ability to convey deep emotional nuance. Her breakthrough cinematic achievement arrived with the 2003 film Daybreak, where critics, including The New York Times' Stephen Holden, praised her as an “avenging demon” embodying complex female experiences; this role earned her the prestigious Guldbagge Award for Best Actress, the Jarl Kulle Scholarship, and the Swedish Theatre Critics Association Award. She replicated that success in Björn Runge’s 2011 film Happy End, portraying Jonna, a widowed driving instructor, a performance that again secured a Guldbagge Award and the Dagens Nyheters Culture Prize.
