Amy Jade Winehouse was an English singer‑songwriter and musician whose contralto voice and candid, autobiographical lyrics made her a defining figure of early 21st‑century pop culture. Born on 14 September 1983 in Enfield, London, she grew up in a musically inclined family; her grandfather’s love for jazz and her father’s Sinatra serenades shaped her early artistic sensibility. After a stint at the National Youth Jazz Orchestra she signed with Simon Fuller’s 19 Management in 2002 and soon secured a publishing deal with EMI, paving the way for her debut album Frank (2003). The record, produced largely by Salaam Remi, blended jazz standards with contemporary soul and earned a Mercury Prize nomination, while the single Stronger Than Me won an Ivor Novello Award. Her sophomore effort Back to Black (2006) propelled her to global superstardom: the album topped the UK chart, sold over 20 million copies worldwide and won five Grammy Awards in 2008, including Record of the Year for the iconic track Rehab.
