Alma Lloyd

Alma Lloyd (April 3, 1914 – June 14, 1988) was an American actress whose brief but memorable career spanned the early sound era of Hollywood. Born in Los Angeles, California, she was the only child of acclaimed film director Frank Lloyd and vaudeville performer Alma Haller, giving her a unique blend of cinematic heritage and stage experience. After honing her craft at the Pasadena Community Playhouse and appearing in a childhood role in her father's 1925 film The Wise Guy, she secured a long‑term contract with Warner Brothers in July 1935, joining a cohort of young actresses earmarked for stardom. Her most notable screen appearances include Colette in her father's 1938 production If I Were King, Jen Coburn in Song of the Saddle (1936), and Betty Trent in the mystery‑comedy The Big Noise (1936), each showcasing her ability to blend charm with dramatic timing. Despite early promise, Lloyd grew increasingly frustrated by the shadow of her father's reputation, publicly stating in a 1936 Chicago Daily Tribune interview that his interventions were a burden to her artistic development. By 1939, she married playwright and actor Franklin Gray, and soon after withdrew from acting to raise their four children—Christopher (1942), Antonia (1947), Jonathan (1951) and Miranda (1954). Her children have continued the family's connection to film, with Christopher producing documentaries and Miranda working as a film editor. Lloyd spent her later years in Santa Barbara, California, where she passed away on June 14, 1988, at the age of 74, leaving behind a legacy of early Hollywood ambition tempered by a devoted family life.
