Alan Moore

Alan Moore is an English author, comics writer, novelist and magician whose career has reshaped the modern graphic narrative. Born on 18 November 1953 in Northampton, England, he grew up in the impoverished Boroughs district and began publishing poetry and essays in underground fanzines during the late 1970s, marking the start of a prolific period that continues to the present day. After early work for titles such as 2000 AD and Warrior, he became the first British writer to achieve prominence at DC Comics, where he revitalised Swamp Thing, authored the seminal Watchmen and crafted the iconic Batman: The Killing Joke and V for Vendetta. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s Moore experimented with independent publishing, founding Mad Love and later America’s Best Comics, producing ambitious projects like From Hell, The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen and the occult‑laden series Promethea. His storytelling blends meticulous research, literary allusion, and a deep interest in magic, anarchism and social critique, often employing non‑linear structures and metafictional techniques that challenge readers’ perception of time and reality. Despite his works inspiring successful Hollywood adaptations, Moore has consistently refused credit or compensation, insisting that the comics medium possesses unique capabilities that film cannot replicate. In addition to writing, he has performed spoken‑word occult ceremonies, recorded experimental music with The Moon and Serpent Grand Egyptian Theatre, and contributed to academic discussions on comics as counter‑culture. He has received numerous awards, including multiple Eisner, Harvey and Hugo honors, and was inducted into the Will Eisner Hall of Fame in 2014. Moore has been married twice, first to Phyllis Dixon (later Moore) and since 2007 to artist Melinda Gebbie, and he is the father of two children, Amber and Leah. Alan Moore’s influence extends beyond comics, shaping contemporary literature, television and popular culture, and solidifying his reputation as one of the most innovative and principled creators of his generation.
