Allan Ernest Garcia (born March 11, 1887 in San Francisco, California) was a prolific American actor and casting director whose career spanned the silent era into the early sound period, covering 1911‑1938. He appeared in more than 120 films, frequently taking supporting or character roles in westerns alongside stars such as Leo Carrillo and Warner Baxter, and he occasionally worked in Mexican productions reflecting his heritage. Garcia’s most enduring legacy stems from his long‑standing collaboration with Charlie Chaplin, for whom he acted in six films between 1921 and 1936, including memorable parts like the ruthless circus proprietor in The Circus (1928), the snobbish butler in City Lights (1931), and the steel‑plant president in Modern Times (1936). In addition to on‑screen work, he served as Chaplin’s casting director on those three classics, helping to shape the ensembles that defined Chaplin’s comedic style. Beyond acting, Garcia was a vocal advocate for better wages and working conditions for extras and bit players; he co‑founded the Motion Picture Extras and Supporting Players Association in 1933, striving to give voice to the often‑overlooked labor force that powered Hollywood productions. Though he directed a single short, The Purple Scar (1917), his influence was felt more through his behind‑the‑scenes efforts and his steady presence on set. As sound films emerged, Garcia’s roles became smaller, yet he continued to work until his untimely death from a heart attack on September 4, 1938 in Santa Monica, California, at the age of 51.
