Barry Egan is a California-based bachelor who runs a company selling themed toilet plungers and other novelty items. He lives a highly unglamorous, socially anxious life under the constant scrutiny of seven overbearing sisters who ridicule him and quietly erode his self-esteem. This background of loneliness and volatility shapes Barry into a man who slips from mild irritability into sudden, explosive eruptions, leaving him to grapple with the consequences long after each outburst.

A chain of unusual events nudges him toward change: he witnesses a puzzling car crash, salvages an abandoned harmonium from the street, and unexpectedly meets Lena Leonard, a coworker of one of his sisters. Their encounter blooms into something tender yet tentative, offering Barry a glimpse of connection he has spent years denying himself. On the return trip, the quartet of brothers reappears, ramming Barry’s car and leaving Lena with injuries that demand medical attention. Barry fights back with a tire iron, rescues Lena at the hospital, and resolves to put an end to the harassment once and for all by pursuing the man behind the extortion, Dean, in Provo, Utah. The confrontation shifts from a brutal showdown to a reckoning that highlights Barry’s stubborn need for control and, in a surprising way, his capacity to stand up for someone he loves.
