Love Never Dies 2012

When the crowd comes hunting for the Phantom in the Paris opera house, Madame Giry María Mercedes and Meg Giry Sharon Millerchip rescue him and help him escape. They eventually settle at Coney Island, where the Phantom, Ben Lewis, goes by the name Mr. Y and runs a music-and-magic show where the imagination truly comes alive. Alongside a colorful cast, Meg Giry stars in the production and longs for the Phantom to finally see her as his new inspiration and muse, while Madame Giry keeps the operation running and has faithfully served the Phantom for ten years.

Meanwhile, the Phantom struggles to translate his music onto paper and comes to realize he needs Christine Daaé [Anna O’Byrne] more than ever. When she is invited to New York to perform for Oscar Hammerstein, he intervenes and reels her into his Coney Island show under false pretenses. Christine’s husband, Raoul [Simon Gleeson], has gambled away their fortune, and in a desperate bid to secure a future for Christine, he reluctantly agrees to let her perform for Mr. Y.

Christine discovers who lured her to the show and is moved by the Phantom’s music, reopening a door to the love they once shared and admitting she would have returned for him if he hadn’t left. The Phantom pleads with her to sing again, yet she initially refuses. Desperation grows as he faces a slow fade into darkness, and he declares he will make Gustave disappear unless she agrees to perform. Fear for her son pushes her to consent, though she keeps the truth from Raoul.

When Raoul finally learns the truth about Mr. Y, he is furious and begs Christine to leave with Gustave, but she cannot. The next day, as the Phantom gives Gustave a tour of Coney Island, he notices the boy’s remarkable musical talent and a taste for darker beauty, raising the possibility that Gustave might be his son. When the Phantom removes his mask, Gustave recoils in terror, and Christine finally reveals the whole truth to him—that Gustave is indeed the Phantom’s son and that she has hidden it all these years. Christine promises to shield the boy and to keep the Phantom’s music alive in their family; she vows to sing in his show and to sing for him one last time, then leaves. The Phantom, in turn, swears that everything he has gained will belong to his son.

Hidden in the shadows, Madame Giry overhears the confession and feels a sting of jealousy, realizing that her long, loyal service may mean less in light of Christine’s newfound connection to the Phantom—and the child who might carry his legacy. Meg’s own fixation with success and attention bubbles to the surface as she seizes the moment to take Gustave backstage, igniting fresh danger.

Seeing Christine drawn back into the Phantom’s orbit and hearing the music stir within her again, Raoul begins to wonder what has become of her heart and why she cannot abandon the Phantom. He, emboldened by drink, challenges the Phantom in a dangerous wager: if Christine sings for his show, Raoul will walk away forever; if she does not, the Phantom will settle all of Raoul’s debts and permit them both to leave in peace. Raoul’s bravado quickly backfires.

Christine and Gustave retreat to her dressing room, where a note from Raoul apologizes and asks forgiveness. As Christine frets over Gustave’s whereabouts, Meg—having taken Gustave—appears backstage. Madame Giry follows the thread of guilt and fear, realizing Meg’s act has spiraled out of control.

The pursuit leads to the pier, where Meg clutches Gustave as he pleads he cannot swim. The Phantom arrives and tries to calm Meg, softly reminding her of his affection and belief in her talent. A snap of fear returns when he remarks, “After all, we can’t all be Christine,” and Meg’s grief erupts into tragedy. A shot sounds, and Christine is struck, falling to the pier as Madame Giry rushes for help.

Christine dies in the Phantom’s arms, and Gustave retreats to Raoul, who cradles his lover as the Phantom steps back to mourn in silence. The Phantom watches as Raoul holds Christine beneath the night sky, then, moved beyond measure, returns to the edge of the water and delivers a final, intimate performance of the song he wrote for Christine, Love Never Dies. As Gustave slowly removes the Phantom’s mask, he dares to look with his heart rather than his eyes, recognizing the humanity beneath the scarred visage. The lights fade on Christine’s memory and a father-and-son moment that tests the boundaries of love, ambition, and forgiveness, closing the curtain on the intertwined fates of Christine and her Phantom.
