Let It Snow 2020

In the stunning and sometimes treacherous landscape of Gudauri, Republic of Georgia, in 2017, viewers are introduced to a gripping story set against the backdrop of breathtaking mountain scenery covered in snow. The film begins with a powerful scene — a young girl named Katie, who is preparing for a daring ski run down the infamous Black Ridge. As she gears up, poor visibility and harsh weather conditions make her vulnerable. Unbeknownst to her, a reckless snowboarder, played by Ivanna Sakhno, zooms down the mountain, failing to see the girl in her path. The snowboarder collides violently with Katie, knocking her down hard. Believing she might be dead, he and his female companion hastily abandon her, leaving the scene and continuing their descent, unaware whether she survives or not.

Fast forward three years, the scene shifts to a festive Christmas atmosphere where American snowboarders Mia and her boyfriend Max arrive at the Georgia Ski Hotel, eager to take on the notorious Black Ridge. Despite numerous warnings from staff and locals about the dangers, especially the dangers associated with the ridge—where several snowboarders have gone missing or met tragic accidents—Max remains undeterred. His obsession with the challenge is clear, but Mia starts to feel uneasy about their plans. The ski resort’s atmosphere is tense, shadowed by past tragedies and the ominous reputation of Black Ridge.

The next day, Max, eager to impress Mia and perhaps propose marriage amid the snow-covered peaks, persuades a hesitant helicopter pilot to airlift them to the top of the ridge. They set out on what should be a memorable adventure; however, as they begin their descent, unpredictable weather conditions turn the situation ominous. A thick fog descends, separating Max from Mia, who struggles to find her bearings. In her confusion, she’s suddenly knocked unconscious by a mysterious figure on a snowmobile who wears a hood to conceal their identity.

When Mia regains consciousness, she finds herself alone, desperate to find Max. She attempts to contact him via walkie-talkie and cell phone, with no success. As she searches the snowy terrain, she notices strange signs—one of which includes rows of red roses stuck into the snow, creating an eerie, unsettling scene. Approaching these symbols, she spots Max—the man she was looking for—bound, gagged, and tied to the back of a snowmobile. The driver of the snowmobile quickly speeds away, dragging Max along, leaving Mia helpless and shocked.

Determined to rescue him, Mia chases the snowmobile, which leads to a tense confrontation. The driver causes an avalanche by setting off a charge, burying Mia beneath the snow. She narrowly escapes an attack by the snowmobile driver, who stabs at her with a knife but only wounds her arm. In a fortunate turn, a stranger comes to her aid, pulling her free from the snow and bringing her back to his remote cabin nearby. There, he tends to her injuries and offers her shelter, food, and warmth, trying to help her recover and piece together what has happened.

The following morning, Mia wakes to find herself alone in the cabin. Searching for clues, she notices a set of keys and attempts to start a snowmobile, only to be interrupted by the hooded figure, who dangles the correct key in front of her before riding away with it. Left behind and exhausted, Mia continues on foot, eventually passing out from fatigue. When she regains consciousness, she hears two rescuers talking nearby about working on Christmas—a detail that underscores the bleak, isolated atmosphere. Too weak to call out, Mia then stumbles upon a tent, inside which she finds a glove belonging to Max. Inside the tent, she uncovers a shrine dedicated to Katie, revealing the tragic past and the connection to the current events.

Her search leads her to another person—one of the anonymous rescuers—who is hanging by ropes and weakly urges Mia to run. But the danger is imminent, and the hooded snowmobile driver ambushes her from behind. Mia flees once again, pushing forward through the snow-covered wilderness. Her desperation grows as she reaches the edge of a steep ridge, where bizarre visions occur. She believes she sees Max alive, only to find a disturbing sight—Max’s corpse, encased within a bloody snowman, with his arm outstretched, clutching the case that held their engagement ring. At this surreal moment, Mia, delusional and grief-stricken, embraces the snowman, speaking to it as if it were Max, and whispers, “Let’s go home.” Without hesitation, she dives off the edge of the ridge, falling to the snowy ground far below.

The film’s climax reveals the cruel truth: the person behind the chaos is revealed to be Olga Sulzhenko, who is actually Katie’s mother. Her actions have been driven by a dark mission, rooted in her desire to exact revenge or perhaps deal with her grief in a destructive way. As the snowmobile driver, she observes Mia’s fall and departs, having completed her grim purpose.

In the final scenes, as the credits roll, it’s shown that Mia survived the fall, battered and bloodied but alive. We see her standing amidst the snow, her face full of rage and anguish as she lets out a long, furious scream, encapsulating her trauma and unresolved pain. The story leaves viewers contemplating the lingering scars of tragedy, the dangerous allure of daring challenges, and the harrowing consequences of revenge, set against the stark and icy landscape that both fascinates and terrifies.
