La La Land 2016

On a bustling Los Angeles highway during the vibrant number “Another Day of Sun”, Mia (Emma Stone), an aspiring actress who works part-time as a barista, encounters Sebastian (Ryan Gosling), a dedicated but struggling jazz pianist, leading to a moment of road rage. Unfortunately, her audition later that day does not go as planned, leaving her disheartened. To lift her spirits, her roommates take her to an extravagant Hollywood Hills party, set to the enchanting tune of “Someone in the Crowd”. However, things take a turn when Mia discovers her car has been towed, forcing her to make a long trek home.

Meanwhile, during a performance at a restaurant, Sebastian, inspired by the music, veers off the set-list and improvises a passionate jazz piece, which catches Mia’s keen ear as she walks by. As she steps inside, he faces the ire of the owner, J.K. Simmons, who reprimands him for not following orders. After Sebastian is fired, Mia tries to compliment him, but he dismisses her coldly.

Months later, fate brings Mia and Sebastian together once more at a party where he performs with a pop cover band from the 1980s. They share playful banter, recalling their earlier encounter, and later find themselves walking together while begrudgingly enjoying each other’s company during “A Lovely Night”. As they stroll around the movie lot, Mia expresses her dreams and passion for acting, while Sebastian shares his deep love for jazz and his aspiration of opening his own jazz club. They find a connection through shared ambitions during the enchanting song “City of Stars”.

Sebastian, eager to spend more time with Mia, invites her to a screening of Rebel Without a Cause. She eagerly accepts, forgetting an old commitment with her current boyfriend. After a disillusioning date, she rushes to find Sebastian as the film starts, leading to a romantic dance at the Griffith Observatory, beautifully captured in “Planetarium”.

Despite a few setbacks in her auditioning journey, Mia, spurred on by Sebastian, decides to create a personal play. As Sebastian plays regularly at a jazz club (“Summer Montage”), their relationship blossoms, culminating in them moving in together. However, when a high school acquaintance, Keith ([John Legend]), invites Sebastian to join his commercially successful jazz band, he reluctantly accepts for the financial security it offers, much to Mia’s dismay during “Start a Fire”.

Their relationship is put to the test during the band’s tour, where Mia confronts Sebastian about his career choices. Upset by his alleged lack of ambition, she walks away. The tension escalates when Sebastian neglects to attend the opening night of Mia’s play, resulting in a disheartening turnout and destructive comments from the few attendees. Disillusioned, Mia considers returning to her hometown in Boulder City, Nevada.

When Sebastian learns of Mia’s play from an impressed casting director, he makes the journey to coax her back for an audition. During her audition, Mia shares a poignant story of her aunt who inspired her, performing a breathtaking song titled “Audition/The Fools Who Dream.” Afterward, they reaffirm their love, both acknowledging uncertainties about what lies ahead.

Fast forward five years, Mia has become an acclaimed actress and is happily married to another man, with whom she shares a child. One evening, while visiting a jazz bar, she is struck by the realization that Sebastian has finally opened his dream jazz club, marked by a logo she designed years prior. As Sebastian notices her presence, he begins to play their love theme during the emotional “Epilogue.” This sparks an imaginative sequence, allowing them to envision a perfect life together, filled with what-ifs. In the end, as Mia exits with her husband, she exchanges a poignant glance with Sebastian, sharing a bittersweet smile that resonates with the memories of their shared dreams and deep connection.
