Whitfield Connor (December 3, 1916 – July 16, 1988) was an American actor, director, and producer whose career spanned more than five decades across stage, film, television, and radio. Born in Rathdowney, Ireland, Connor began his professional career in radio during the 1930s, building a foundation in vocal performance before transitioning to live theater. In 1945, he made his Broadway debut as Horatio in a production of Hamlet, and by 1948 he had won his first theatrical honor, a Theatre World Award, for his portrayal of Macduff in Macbeth starring Michael Redgrave. Connor's film work included appearances in notable productions such as Tap Roots, Scarlet Angel, Prince of Pirates, The President's Lady, City of Bad Men, The Saracen Blade, and BUtterfield 8. On television, he became a familiar face in series like The Bigelow Theatre, Guiding Light, Dragnet, The Loretta Young Show, Studio One, The Star and the Story, The Millionaire, Willy, Front Row Center, The Big Story, Decoy, The Phil Silvers Show, and The Doctors. He also served as the commercial spokesperson for the Gulf Oil Corporation, most prominently during their sponsorship of NBC News programs in the early 1960s, including coverage of NASA space missions. Connor's most enduring professional legacy was his deep association with the Elitch Theatre in Denver, Colorado, where he became a member of the resident company in 1948, an association that lasted for the rest of his life. He returned in 1949 as the leading man in the summer stock cast and continued in that role through 1953. In 1964, he was appointed general manager of the theater under producer Helen Bonfils, helping to transform it from a summer stock format into a Star Package System that brought in touring shows led by well-known stars. Following Bonfils' death, Connor took over as producer alongside his wife, Haila Stoddard, along with Stoddard's son Christopher Kirkland, continuing until the theater closed in 1987. In 1967, Connor was elected president of the Council of Stock Theaters, cementing his influence in American regional theater. On a personal note, Connor married Helen Catherine Clausen on November 1, 1941, and they had a daughter, Erin Catherine Connor, born on August 31, 1947. He later married actress Haila Stoddard on January 26, 1956, after meeting her during the 1953 Elitch Theatre summer season, and they remained together until his death. Connor passed away on July 16, 1988, at the age of 71, following stomach surgery in Norwalk, Connecticut.
