Katrin Välbe (until 1929 Jekaterina Poska; 31 October 1904 – 5 July 1981) was a distinguished Estonian actress whose career spanned several decades and encompassed both theatrical and cinematic performances. Born into a prominent Estonian family in Võru, she was the daughter of Gabriel and Lydia Poska, with her father working as a lawyer. Her family background was particularly notable, as her uncles included the influential statesman Jaan Poska, politician Mihkel Poska, and Estonian Apostolic Orthodox Church clergymen Nikolai and Paul Poska, giving her deep roots in Estonia's political and cultural history. After completing her secondary education, Välbe initially enrolled at the University of Tartu in 1922 to study medical sciences, though she left after just one year to pursue her true passion. In 1930, she graduated from the Drama Theatre School in Tallinn, where she had studied under the renowned drama pedagogue Hilda Gleser, whose training shaped her into a formidable stage presence. Her professional career began in 1931 at Tallinna Töölisteater, where she worked until 1944, followed by engagements at Noorsooteater (1945–1946), the Estonia Theatre (1946–1949), and finally the Estonian Drama Theatre, where she served from 1949 to 1951 and again from 1952 to 1971, cementing her legacy as one of Estonia's most dedicated theatrical performers. Beyond her stage work, Välbe became a recognizable face in Estonian cinema beginning in the early 1950s, appearing in notable films such as Valgus Koordis (1951), Andruse õnn (1955), Pöördel (1957), Vihmas ja päikeses (1960), and Gladiaator (1969), among many others. She also expanded her repertoire to include radio plays and television films, showcasing her versatility across different mediums. In recognition of her significant contributions to Estonian arts, Välbe was honored as a Meritorious Artist of the Estonian SSR in 1958. She passed away in Tallinn in 1981 and was laid to rest at Tallinn's Forest Cemetery, leaving behind a rich artistic legacy that continues to be celebrated in Estonian cultural history.
