Thomas Törless arrives at the academy at the dawn of the 20th century, stepping into a world where power is wielded as quietly as it is exercised. From his first days, he becomes a quiet observer of the social code that governs the boys, a code built on hierarchies, fear, and whispered cruelties. When Anselm von Basini is caught stealing by a fellow student, Reiting, the balance of the school shifts in an unsettling way: Basini is compelled to become Reiting’s “slave,” bowing to his sadistic rituals and enduring repeated torture and sexual abuse by Reiting and another student, Beineberg. Through it all, Törless watches with a clinical, almost dispassionate curiosity, his emotional distance keeping him from immediate judgment even as the cruelty unfolds around him.
