Medfield College faces a looming crisis when Dean Higgins discovers that his department has burned through a fortune in overspending, much of it tied to Prof. Quigley’s science class. The money drain isn’t for grand experiments, but for a single test subject—a cow that’s being fed a strange mix of concoctions to plump it up. Enraged by the waste and the mounting risk to the college’s finances, Higgins fires Quigley and threatens to eject the entire class. It’s in the heat of this confrontation, as Higgins exits in a flash of anger, that a chaotic spill occurs: Dexter Riley’s laboratory experiment collides with Richard Schuyler’s vitamin cereal mix, setting off a chain reaction that changes everything.
The cow, having ingested a portion of the mixed cereal, suddenly produces an astonishingly large amount of milk—more than 80 gallons, in a startling display of the cereal’s strange effect. The next morning, Dexter consumes some of the cereal himself and wakes to an extraordinary power: super-strength. The same chemical boost travels to the house’s pet dog, who also gains remarkable strength. What starts as a misfired experiment spirals into a spectacular demonstration when Dexter uses his new abilities to perform a dramatic feat—lifting an obese student in a chair with one arm while pinning another student with the other, right before the eyes of the dean and Quigley.
Higgins sees an opportunity in Dexter’s powers. If he can harness this break in the system, the college might escape its financial peril and keep the Board of Regents from firing him. The plan hinges on promoting the formula-laced cereal, turning it into a commercial weapon. Higgins pitches the concept to Aunt Harriet Crumply, the president of Crumply Crunch, who is eager to showcase the cereal’s extraordinary strength-enhancing properties. The board agrees to a public challenge: Medfield will go head-to-head against Krinkle Krunch, a rival cereal company led by the suave and unscrupulous Mr. Kirwood Krinkle, in a competition between sponsored weight-lifting teams. A larger, better-funded State College enters the scene as Krinkle’s side.
Behind Krinkle’s scheming, a mole named Harry undermines the plan from the inside, feeding information to Krinkle’s top executives. Hearing rumors of a possible breakthrough, Krinkle hires A. J. Arno and a crew recently released from prison to steal the formula. The intruders press their advantage and break in, but their invasion is almost foiled. They seize Schuyler, partly because no one realizes that Dexter’s miraculous strength comes from the cereal’s secret ingredient rather than Schuyler’s vitamins. The criminals take Schuyler to Chinatown, where they employ acupuncture and hypnotism to extract the formula. They hypnotize him to return home and not reveal what happened, but the manipulation has unintended consequences: Schuyler ends up commandeering a police car, triggering a high-speed chase that lands him in jail.
Crucially, in Krinkle Krunch’s cereal, the formula alone isn’t enough to confer strength without the right combination. Once Arno and his men are confronted with the reality that Dex’s formula is the missing piece, the team’s confidence falters, and the danger of the plan becomes clear. The mole behind Krinkle’s operation realizes that if the hidden truth remains unknown, Medfield’s team might still win the weight-lifting contest—and Krinkle would lose his edge.
The day of the contest arrives. Dexter discovers that the key to the cereal’s power lies with his own formula, and he races back to the lab to retrieve it. He borrows a vintage car owned by the dean to reach the lab just as Arno and ten of his goons close in. After consuming some of the formula, Dexter fights off the intruders with fierce determination, even using Harry to strike Arno and the others down like bowling pins. A radio report adds urgency: he has only four minutes to return to the competition or forfeit.
In a bold, cinematic move, he modifies the car’s fuel with the formula and powers through the course, the vehicle tearing apart as it speeds toward the arena. He arrives in the nick of time, though the car is a wreck and the dean looks on in horror. The final moments of the contest are nerve-racking as Medfield trails, yet Dexter summons the last reserve of his strength to lift an astonishing 1,111-pound weight, securing the victory for Crumply Crunch and Medfield.
In the aftermath, Higgins and Quigley retain their positions, vindicated by the win and the financial stability it brings. Arno is imprisoned once again, and Krinkle pays a painful price for his meddling, breaking his own hand after attempting the wrong cereal. The story closes on a note of cautious triumph—science, strategy, and a little bit of luck have saved the college, but the consequences of mixing curiosity with commerce linger as a reminder that power, once unleashed, comes with responsibilities and risks that are far from over.
