Inge, a kind‑hearted girl who cherishes herself, is entrusted with a loaf of bread to deliver to her impoverished parents. While crossing a puddle, she fears soiling her new shoes, discards the bread into the mud and steps on it. This selfish act makes the earth split open and swallow her whole. The story is adapted from a Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale.
