Spoilers ahead
Set in 1950s Tunisia, the film follows a 25-year-old woman, Alia, who returns to her birthplace—a prince’s palace where her mother, Khedija, once worked as a house servant and mistress. Alia had fled the palace ten years earlier, carrying buried memories of her childhood. During a visit to pay respects for the death of the prince, she wanders through the largely abandoned halls and is confronted by memories that surface as vivid flashbacks of her early years.
She begins to piece together a narrative about her mother’s sexuality and exploitation in a space ordered by gender and class difference. She is reawakened to persistent questions about her father’s identity, questions that have lingered as she tried to define her own place in the world.
