Jennie Lee Julia Roberts is the lead singer of the all-girl Baltimore rock band, the Mystery. At her high school graduation, Jennie delivers the valedictorian speech while fellow band member and bass guitarist Daryle accepts a proposal from her high school sweetheart Frankie. The moment captures the group at a crossroads, balancing growing dreams with tight-knit friendships that keep pulling them back to music.

The plan is clear: the band heads to Florida to audition for a summer gig at a seaside nightclub. Yet a string of problems unfolds. Jennie’s older brother worries that the trip could jeopardize her college plans. The band’s keyboardist abruptly leaves, and their drummer Mooch finds herself in trouble after insulting a gang member, who then vandalizes their van. In a fit of improvisation and loyalty, Jennie borrows a van from a friend and, with guitarist Billie lending a hand, ends up stealing the gang member’s personal van to keep the trip alive.

With a new male keyboard player named Nicky, the Mystery travels south toward the audition. They reach the nightclub after hours and fear they’ve missed their shot. Not willing to give up, they locate the club owner, Martin Falcon, at his beach house. They let themselves in and meet Hamlet, Falcon’s loyal Doberman, who instantly forms a bond with Billy after a playful song. Falcon returns home drunk and misreads their intentions, thinking they’re burglars. Jennie pleads for a chance to be heard, but Falcon explains they’re actually a day early. Facing financial strain and nowhere to stay, he offers them the room that the competition winners were supposed to use for the summer—a small, rough-hewn setup in a tool shack that awakens their resilience. The next night, the band delivers a performance that draws an overwhelming roar from the crowd, convincing Falcon to hire them for the summer.

The Mystery stands out in the preppy, sun-soaked beach town, with Mooch stubbornly keeping her black leather jacket on despite the heat. Daryle begins dating a local rich boy, which earns the band invites to glamorous parties, while Billie wrestles with private turmoil. Billy’s depression deepens, and Jennie nudges Mooch toward a budding connection with Nicky, who has a crush on Mooch. Meanwhile, Jennie finds herself drawn to Falcon, the older club owner, creating a complicated dynamic between ambition, love, and loyalty.

Falcon tells Jennie he has a music agent friend who books bands for European gigs and plans to visit the club to watch them perform. When Falcon learns that Jennie is considering moving in with him, he chooses to end the romance, worried she might give up opportunities for him. Billy teeters on the edge of a breakdown, almost overdosing, and Frankie incites a riot when he arrives at the club only to see Daryle being ogled by locals.

On the night the agent comes to see them, Jennie finishes a song written especially for the band by Falcon, hoping to seal their fate. The hunt for Mooch’s stolen van intensifies as the street gang closes in. The girls, along with Mooch, fight off the gang, and Hamlet chases them away from the club, ending with the gang’s arrest. When asked what the agent thought, Jennie hints that the agent loved their music, but she declined the European offer. The truth, revealed by Nicky, is that the agent wanted Jennie alone to work with studio musicians, not the entire band. Jennie realizes the heart of their magic lies in their unity and refuses to go solo. She decides to turn down that opportunity, choosing to stay with the group she’s built, and to keep the family together.

Jennie says goodbye to Falcon, and the band heads home, with Hamlet now fully part of the group. The summer leaves them with a shared experience that deepens their bonds, strengthens their music, and confirms that the real journey isn’t just about gigs abroad, but about staying true to the friendships and voice that brought them together in the first place.
