The film opens with a sumptuous banquet at the opulent estate of the Grand Yakuza leader Sekiuchi, the formidable head of the Sanno-kai who governs the entire Kanto region. The gathering showcases the raw power and delicate rivalries that simmer within the organization, as Sekiuchi’s authority is reinforced by a room full of Yakuza leaders under his control. In the wake of the formal meal, Kato, the chief lieutenant of Sekiuchi, pulls aside Ikemoto and makes his displeasure plain: Ikemoto has grown friendly with Murase, a rival gang leader, during a period of imprisonment they shared. The tension between loyalty and ambition catches the viewer’s attention early on, as Kato lays down a hard command — bring the Murase-gumi gang in line — and Ikemoto immediately passes the assignment to his subordinate Otomo, who commands his own crew with a keen, self-assured efficiency.

Not long after, a violent incident erupts at Murase’s nightclub. A man posing as a customer is bilked out of about one million yen in a calculated shakedown. The twist reveals itself: the infiltrator is a member of Otomo’s own family planted within the nightclub to serve as a catalyst for a broader gang war against Murase. Murase remains largely in the dark about his falling out of favor with Sekiuchi, clinging to the last threads of support he thinks he can rely on — including his long-standing prison friendship with Ikemoto. Murase seeks comfort and guidance from Ikemoto, not realizing that Ikemoto has been put on a path to terminate Murase’s faction. Each piece of seemingly prudent advice from Ikemoto only strengthens the enemy’s hand, subtly chipping away at Murase’s resources and grip on power. A brutal moment punctuates the tension when Otomo’s men scar Murase’s chief lieutenant Kimura, a clear signal that the blood feud is no longer theoretical.

As the dust settles, the trajectory of alliances and betrayals becomes devastatingly clear. Ikemoto and Murase are slain, the once-promising liaison ends in tragedy, and Otomo finds himself imprisoned in a maximum-security ward alongside Kimura. The prison’s dangerous atmosphere culminates in a violent ambush, with Kimura stabbing Otomo in the belly with a makeshift knife. The film’s intricate web of loyalties and aliases circles back to its grim core: power’s price is paid in blood, and every strategic move ripples through the very lives involved. In the final act, the balance of control tips decisively as Kato, the architect of the earlier machinations, secretly eliminates Sekiuchi and ascends to the throne as the new Grand Yakuza leader of the Sanno-kai.

Throughout the narrative, the film deftly threads themes of ambition, loyalty, and the fragility of trust within a sprawling criminal empire. The opulent settings contrast with the brutal, often unavoidable violence that underpins the characters’ decisions, creating a tense atmosphere in which every alliance is tested and every betrayal carries a heavy consequence. The result is a stark, relentless examination of how rivalries within the underworld are engineered, exploited, and ultimately resolved through a combination of strategic foresight and brutal force.
