In early Kolkata, a tender romance blossoms between a law student, Ramesh, and Hemnalini, the sister of a friend, whose quiet devotion lights up the city’s bustling streets. But a sudden summons from his village home drags him away, and his father presses him toward a different path: an arranged marriage to Susheela, the daughter of a vulnerable widow. Ramesh struggles with the duty before him, admitting that his heart truly belongs to Hemnalini, yet the widow’s impassioned plea tests his resolve. He yields, though with a heavy heart, and the ceremony proceeds. He then accompanies his new bride on a river voyage back to Kolkata, the weight of the arrangement resting on his shoulders.
A ferocious storm erupts, tossing the boat and sealing its fate in the churn of the waters. When the storm subsides, Ramesh awakens on a deserted shore under a starry sky. Across the sand, he glimpses the unconscious form of a young bride. On hearing his call of “Susheela,” she stirs, her pulse still beating, and opens her eyes. There is no one else near—alive or dead. The two slip away together and board a train to Kolkata, the bride wondering why they aren’t heading toward Kashi, yet trusting his judgment implicitly. Hem, his true love, remains ignorant of these events; Ramesh has vanished from the evening of her birthday party, leaving friends and family to piece together what happened.
Back in Kolkata, the veil of mistaken identity gradually lifts. The young woman aboard the boat is not Susheela at all—she is Kamala. Her so-called husband is a doctor named Nalinaksha. To shield Kamala from scandal, Ramesh places her in a boarding school while he searches for a way to set things right. But the web thickens when Hem’s would-be suitor, Akshay, uncovers the truth and brings undeniable proof to Hem. Unable to bear the scandal, Ramesh retreats to Gorakhpur with Kamala, while Hem is taken by her father to the holy city of Kashi to help her forget. There Kamala unexpectedly encounters Nalinaksha and she and he begin to warm to each other.
Meanwhile, Kamala reads an old advertisement that reveals the magnitude of the lie she’s living. She resolves to drown herself in the river, but Ramesh returns, discovering her suicide note and scouring every corner for her. He remains unaware that she has been rescued by a courtesan and sheltered in Kashi under the care of Nalinaksha’s mother. Kamala finally faces her husband for the first time, though she cannot speak openly, for he is betrothed to Hem. The moment the advertisement that Kamala kept hidden is finally unearthed, the truth breaks into the light. Ramesh locates Nalinaksha and arrives at his house, determined to face the consequences of his deception.
The narrative probes questions of love, duty, and the weight of social conventions. It invites viewers to ask whether genuine affection can overcome doubts born of circumstance and obligation, and whether the heart’s truth can outpace the rigid rules that govern the world around them.
