A longtime admirer and former lover, Peter Walsh arrives, restless and unsettled, unable to disguise the inner turmoil his career and love life have stirred. For Clarissa, this encounter reinforces the quiet, affectionate life she has chosen with the steady, dependable Richard Dalloway. As the day unfolds, a figure from Clarissa’s past returns: Sally, once her lesbian partner, now a wife of a self-made millionaire and mother of five, bringing with her memories and the social complexity of the era.
