Spoilers ahead

During an air raid in England, David Bannister, a war correspondent, marries Joan Bannister. Upon returning to the United States, their ocean liner is sunk by a German submarine; they and other survivors escape into lifeboats and are rescued, beginning a perilous journey home that casts a long shadow over their postwar lives.

Back home, David becomes a radio reporter and launches an exposé on the Nazi connections of an American industrialist who is an associate of Alicia Rolf, a close friend of Joan. The investigation uncovers a broader conspiratorial web, revealing how espionage and loyalty can blur in a nation unsettled by war and fear, and it sets David on a collision course with secrets hiding in plain sight.
