Spoilers ahead
In 1898, German outlaw Erik Klaus disappeared after burying a treasure in the Arizona desert, leaving ominous warnings for anyone who would seek it. Years later, a group of cowboys uncovers the loot: a mysterious artifact known as the summoning stone, which releases Krampus when exposed to open flames. According to legend, Saint Nicholas left pieces of the stone in the shoes and stockings of his enemies, so that Krampus would kill them when the clothing was dried by fire. When the stone is dropped onto a lantern, Krampus is summoned and proceeds to massacre the cowboys. Cooper, the lone survivor, flees as the stone slides into a stream and is lost.
