Jersey is a compelling tale of a cricketer’s journey, showcasing his struggles and the lengths he will go to fulfill his son’s dreams. The story follows Arjun, portrayed by Shahid Kapoor, who once basked in the glory of cricket stardom in the mid-1980s. With an impressive record of 106 half-centuries, 52 centuries, and 9 double centuries, he was seen as the best batsman of his time. However, his romantic life is tumultuous, as he elopes with Vidya (Mrunal Thakur), overcoming her father’s disapproval.

Fast forward a decade, Arjun’s life has taken a hit; he shares a small apartment with Vidya and their son Ketan. The dream of cricket has faded, and Ketan, full of aspirations, wishes for an Indian cricket team jersey for his birthday. Arjun is facing harsh realities—he’s suspended from his job at FCI while Vidya is the sole breadwinner working at a hotel, and they are behind on bills.

Adding to the burden, Arjun squanders the money Vidya had given him for essential payments, leading to conflicts over financial irresponsibility in their household. Arjun’s struggles are compounded by his past, which includes being overlooked for the Indian cricket team—twice—despite a promising career. Baali (Pankaj Kapur), Arjun’s coach, still believes in him and offers an assistant coaching position, but Arjun firmly states he is finished with cricket.

The tipping point arrives when he cannot afford Ketan’s desired jersey. In desperate need of money, he agrees to play in a charity match against the New Zealand team, where he shines, scoring a century. However, his match fee is donated to charity, and he is left again without the jersey for Ketan. This leads him to contemplate stealing from Vidya, but she catches him, escalating tensions in their relationship.

Having hit rock bottom, he returns to Baali, expressing his desire not to be merely an assistant coach, but a player. After a series of setbacks, including being denied a chance to practice, Jasleen (Geetika Mehandru), a journalist, writes about Arjun’s remarkable charity match performance, reigniting discussions about his potential. Eventually, he earns a spot on the Punjab Ranji team.

With determination, Arjun conquers the field, achieving one milestone after another, including a triple century in the semi-finals. However, the strain takes a toll on his health, and as he recovers, Vidya urges him to choose between his family and cricket, leading to a poignant moment of reflection.

As Arjun returns to play in the finals against Karnataka, the stakes are high. Facing a daunting target and battling exhaustion, he rallies his team in a nail-biting finish, ultimately leading Punjab to victory. Tragically, just days after this triumphant moment, he succumbs to a long-known heart condition—which had initially driven him away from the sport at 26.

In the aftermath of his passing, Jasleen pens a bestseller titled Jersey, immortalizing Arjun’s legacy and struggles, encapsulating not just the triumphs of a sportsman, but the profound and often painful journey of chasing one’s dreams against all odds.
