As Nathan Gardner (parenthetically) navigates the treacherous terrain of his wife Theresa's post-mastectomy reality, he makes the fateful decision to uproot his family - comprising Lavinia, Benny, and Jack - to the rural farm inherited from his late father. The tranquil landscape is shattered one night by the arrival of a mesmerizingly vibrant meteorite that crashes into their front yard near the well, its very presence seeming to awaken an otherworldly energy.
The following morning, hydrologist Ward Phillips (no actor credited) arrives on the scene, accompanied by the mayor and sheriff of the nearby town of Arkham. As they converge upon the meteorite's site, Nathan and Lavinia are drawn into a series of inexplicable occurrences that culminate in its sudden vanishing act.
Ward's initial fascination with the meteorite gives way to alarm as he discovers an unsettling alteration in the groundwater: its once-pristine clarity has been supplanted by an oily sheen. His cautionary warnings about drinking the water fall on deaf ears, but it soon becomes clear that the family's exposure has far-reaching consequences.
Jack, once a carefree youngster, finds himself obsessed with the property's well, where he reports communicating with an enigmatic presence lurking beneath its surface. As Theresa prepares dinner, her vacant stare belies a bizarre lack of coordination, culminating in a gruesome accident that leaves her fingers severed.
Nathan rushes his wife to the hospital, while Benny becomes increasingly withdrawn, only to reappear at dusk claiming that time has lost all meaning for him. The family's attempts to reconnect via phone are thwarted by an inexplicable disconnect.
Upon their return, Nathan's usually even temperament gives way to a violent outburst of rage directed at his children. As the farm's crops wither and die, the Gardners' world begins to unravel amidst an atmosphere of creeping dread.
In a desperate bid to salvage her family, Lavinia turns to the forbidden knowledge contained within the Necronomicon, sacrificing her own well-being in the process. Her ritualistic offering only serves to accelerate the descent into chaos, as the Color - that mesmerizing, otherworldly hue - begins to exert its malevolent influence.
Theresa's sudden and inexplicable connection to the alpaca stables reveals Jack and Benny's anguished screams, prompting her hasty intervention. The "Color" responds by striking Theresa and Jack with a bolt of energy, fusing them into a monstrous, inhuman form.
Stranded without functioning electronic devices, the family is forced to retreat to the attic, where they shield themselves from the blinding sunlight that seems to exacerbate their condition. As Benny reveals that the alpacas have also been transformed by the Color's power, Nathan is faced with the unthinkable task of euthanizing these once-peaceful creatures.
As his grip on reality begins to slip, Nathan is compelled to confront the horrors unfolding around him, including his own twisted desire to end the lives of those he loves.
As Lavinia and Benny attempt to escape the farm on horseback, their equine companion suddenly takes flight, abandoning them in the midst of chaos. Benny's insistence that the family dog is trapped inside the well ultimately leads him to take a precarious plunge into its depths, where he becomes eerily entwined with the mysterious Color. Meanwhile, Nathan, now fully consumed by the entity's influence, locks Lavinia away in the attic with Theresa and Jack, who have undergone grotesque transformations, their once-familiar faces now twisted into monstrous visages that attack her with feral ferocity. Just as all hope seems lost, Ward and the sheriff arrive just in time to break into the attic and rescue Lavinia from this living nightmare.
In a desperate bid to save his family, Nathan opens fire on the transformed loved ones, but his actions only serve to further blur the lines between reality and madness. As Ward rushes Lavinia outside, the Color bursts forth from the well, prompting Nathan to make one final attempt to vanquish it with gunfire. Tragically, the sheriff misinterprets Nathan's intentions, resulting in a hail of bullets that ends his life. With their leader fallen, Ward and the sheriff flee the farm, seeking refuge at Ezra's nearby cabin.
However, their respite is short-lived, as they soon discover Ezra's desiccated corpse and an eerie audio recording of his voice, which reveals the Color's true intentions: to reshape its environment into a familiar landscape. As Ward and the sheriff attempt to escape a burst of the Color, they are confronted by a mutated tree that proves to be their undoing outside the cabin.
With the sheriff fallen, Ward is left to rescue Lavinia, only to find her fully possessed by the Color, which erupts from the well in a spectacular display. As the entity begins to unravel space and time, Ward is treated to a vision of its extraterrestrial origins: a psychedelic exoplanet inhabited by tentacled alien entities before Lavinia disintegrates into nothingness.
As reality continues to distort and fragment, Ward seeks refuge in the farmhouse's wine cellar, pursued by the vengeful apparition of Nathan. The Color's malevolent force ultimately destroys the property, leaving Ward as the sole survivor, emerging from the ruins like a phoenix from the ashes of the blasted heath that once was their farm.
In a poignant epilogue, an older Ward stands atop the newly completed dam, surveying the reservoir that now covers the former farmland. Though few people remember the incident, Ward's harrowing experience has left him with a profound appreciation for the unknown and a deep-seated aversion to drinking water from the reservoir. He comes to realize that the Color was merely a messenger from realms beyond human comprehension, its true purpose lost in the void of chaos and destruction. As he departs, an insect mutated by the Color's influence flits by, a haunting reminder of the eldritch forces that lurk just beyond the edge of our reality.
