In the vibrant cityscape of New York, a cultural tapestry woven with Asian threads serves as the backdrop for the poignant and poignant tale of Anran and Yongyuan's enduring bond. Their lives intersect in 1982 when Anran transfers to Yongyuan's school, bringing with her an air of sophistication that sets her apart from her classmates who greet her with a mixture of suspicion and curiosity.

Yongyuan, ever the devoted sentinel, accepts his role as Anran's shadow, a position he holds for two decades. His unwavering dedication is exemplified by his uncanny ability to recognize the sound of her footsteps, a testament to the depth of their connection. Their shared experience of losing their mothers in a devastating earthquake becomes the cornerstone of their bond, as they find solace in each other's company.

As fate would have it, their lives take divergent paths, with Yongyuan's guardian passing away and his uncle whisking him away without allowing for a farewell. This pattern of separation is repeated throughout the years, leaving Anran and Yongyuan to navigate the complexities of life without each other.

A decade later, Yongyuan returns to Beijing, only to find himself reunited with Anran, now a pre-med student played by Gao Yuanyuan (Caught in the Web). Her transformation from a teenager to a young adult is marked by a newfound sense of purpose. Yongyuan, portrayed by Nicholas Tse (The Bullet Vanishes), has undergone a metamorphosis as well, his path leading him down a trail of shady dealings aimed at securing Anran's future education.

As Anran prepares to depart for Columbia University, Yongyuan vanishes once more, leaving her to forge a new path. In Manhattan, she finds herself entwined in a romantic relationship with Michael (Qin Hao), a temperamental painter whose passion is rivalled only by his possessiveness.

Meanwhile, Yongyuan has amassed a fortune solely for the purpose of searching for Anran, his quest culminating in the discovery of her presence through Michael's paintings. This serendipitous reunion is bathed in the warm glow of nostalgia, yet their love remains forever torn asunder, twice more.
