In the sweltering summer of 1981, on the Red Crow Indian Reservation in Quebec, Canada, Gisigu's daily catch yields a peculiar surprise: the gutted salmon continue to twitch and squirm. Meanwhile, indigenous Sheriff Traylor is summoned to respond to a distress call about a dying canine, belonging to his estranged wife, Nurse Joss. With heavy heart, Traylor administers the mercy shot, then pays a visit to Joss, only to learn that their son Joseph has been apprehended for vandalism in Hollarbaster and is currently incarcerated alongside his half-brother Lysol. Upon returning to Gisigu's humble abode, he's met with an unsettling sight: the gutted fish still writhing in lifeless agony. Joss's deceased dog reanimates in the trunk of Traylor's police cruiser, prompting him to take drastic measures and put it out of its misery with a gunshot. As if this weren't enough, Gisigu and Traylor consign both the dog and the fish to a fiery fate.

As the night wears on, Traylor and Joss embark on a mission to spring Joseph from jail, accompanied by their son, Lysol, and Police Officer Shamu. Their journey is marred by an encounter with a rabid, violent individual who bites Joseph on the arm. The wounded youth is whisked away to the hospital, where his white, expectant girlfriend Charlie awaits. That evening, Traylor responds to a call from indigenous resident Shooker, only to be ambushed and attacked by Shooker's white companion in her home. With shotgun in hand, Traylor dispatches the assailant, then joins forces with Shooker to make their way to a nearby bridge where Joss, Joseph, and Charlie have taken refuge after making a daring escape from an ambulance.

Fast-forward six months, and the "zed" plague has spread far and wide, transforming the Red Crow Reservation into a fortified sanctuary. Its inhabitants have discovered that indigenous people possess a peculiar immunity to the flesh-eating affliction, while white individuals remain susceptible. As tensions simmer within the compound's walls, Lysol becomes increasingly agitated by Joseph's propensity for bringing outsiders – including a man and his young daughter, both of whom bear the scars of infected bites, as well as Lilith, whose own infection she conceals – into their midst.

As night descended upon Lysol's makeshift sanctuary, a sense of unease settled over Joseph as he stumbled upon a gruesome scene: Lilith, once a member of their community, now a mindless zombie, feasting on Lysol's mangled flesh. The trio, including Moon, hastily retreated to the compound with Lilith in tow, restraints struggling to contain her undead ferocity. Lysol's pain and desperation reached a boiling point as he blamed the influx of white survivors for his disfigurement, snapping and turning on Joseph with a blade. In a fit of rage, Lysol released Lilith into the compound, unleashing chaos upon their once-peaceful community.

Meanwhile, Traylor and Gisigu returned from their mission to eradicate zombies at a nearby gas station, only to find their home overrun by the very creatures they sought to destroy. The duo learned that Joseph, Joss, Charlie, and eight other survivors were trapped in the basement of the compound, desperate for rescue. As Gisigu and Bumper worked to free them, Traylor fell victim to the ravenous hordes, sacrificing himself to save his family from certain doom.

The surviving party – comprising Joss, Joseph, and Charlie – escaped with Gisigu and Bumper in tow. As they navigated the treacherous landscape, Joseph and Gisigu entered a church to intercept two of Lysol's associates, intent on slaughtering a group of survivors. However, Lysol had other plans, ambushing Bumper with a vicious attack that left him gravely wounded. Joss retaliated by striking down Lysol, only for the injured leader to unleash a zombie from the trunk of a nearby car before meeting his demise at Joseph's hands.

Charlie, now bitten and infected, clung to life as the group fled the scene, pursued by hordes of undead. As they tended to their wounded comrade, Joseph and Gisigu led Lysol away from the chaos, only for Joseph to deliver a fatal blow. In a desperate bid to draw the zombies away from his friends, Gisigu fired a shot into the air, attracting the ravenous horde and ensuring Lysol's grisly fate.

With their options dwindling, the survivors faced a dire predicament: a lone boat, their only hope for escape, lay burning on the shore. Shooker, ever the hero, returned with two vessels, whisking Bumper away to safety while Joseph, Charlie, and Joss set sail into the unknown aboard the other craft. Gisigu, armed with a sword, chose to remain behind, valiantly fighting off the undead and emerging victorious – or so it seemed.

As the survivors drifted further out to sea, Charlie gave birth to a baby girl, her life force ebbing away as she succumbed to the bite wound that would soon transform her into one of the very monsters they sought to flee. Joseph's heavy heart was wracked with grief as he put an end to Charlie's suffering, his mournful tears mingling with the sea spray. And so, their fate remained uncertain, lost at sea amidst a world gone mad.
