Helen Black is a devout, church-going Christian who remains firm in her vow to abstain from sex until marriage. She faces pressure from Church Friend to explore her sexuality, yet she resists, determined to honor her beliefs. In contrast, a neighborhood thief, Second Lover, becomes a test of her moral stance as she chastises him for his un-Christian behavior.
One day, she wanders into Road’s End, a store advertising a variety of treasures. There she spots a puppet that resembles a black man, and the store proprietor warns that the puppet comes from East India and carries strange powers to satisfy its owner’s desires. Intrigued but skeptical, Helen buys the puppet, a figure known as The Doll.
