Yulene Olaizola

Yulene Olaizola is a Mexican film director, editor, and producer known for her evocative documentary and narrative works that often explore the intersections of literature, nature, and cultural memory. Born in Mexico City on June 13, 1983, she pursued formal training at the prestigious Centro de Capacitación Cinematográfica (CCC), graduating summa cum laude with a thesis documentary titled Intimidades de Shakespeare y Víctor Hugo (2008), a film that earned multiple awards on the international festival circuit and announced her as a significant new voice in Mexican cinema. After the success of her debut, she continued to develop a distinctive visual language, directing Paraísos artificiales (2011) before embarking on an artistic residency with the Fogo Island Arts Corporation in Newfoundland, Canada, where she produced the striking short Fogo (2012). The film was selected for the Official Selection of the 10th Morelia International Film Festival and later featured in the Directors’ Fortnight, a prestigious parallel section of the 65th Cannes Film Festival, solidifying her reputation as a filmmaker capable of bridging local stories with global audiences. In collaboration with fellow filmmaker Rubén Imaz, she co‑directed Epitafio (2015) and co‑founded the production company Malacosa Cine, which has become a platform for independent Mexican projects. Her expertise was recognised in 2018 when she joined the advisory board of Procine, the national film commission, contributing to policy and development initiatives. Most recently, Olaizola returned to Cannes for the 71st edition with Selva Trágica (2020), a work supported by the Cinefondation’s L’atelier program that continues her exploration of ecological and literary themes. Throughout her career, she has demonstrated a commitment to artistic experimentation, mentorship, and the promotion of Mexican cinema on the world stage, earning her a place among the most innovative directors of her generation.
