Warren Coleman

Warren Coleman was an American operatic baritone whose career spanned the golden age of Broadway and the evolution of American opera in the early to mid‑twentieth century. Born on 24 August 1900 in West Tisbury, Massachusetts, on the island of Martha’s Vineyard, Coleman grew up amidst a rich cultural heritage that would later inform his resonant, nuanced vocal performances. He made his Broadway debut in 1934 and quickly became noted for his deep, sonorous timbre and charismatic stage presence, qualities that earned him leading roles in several landmark productions. Notably, he created the role of Crown in George Gershwin’s seminal opera Porgy and Bess, delivering a performance that captured the tragic dignity of the character and helped cement the work’s enduring legacy in American musical theater.
