What's After the Movie
Stacy Douglas Peralta, born on October 15, 1957 in Venice, California, is a seminal figure in American skate culture and documentary cinema. Growing up of Mexican and Irish descent, he joined the legendary Zephyr Competition Team – the Z‑Boys – at the age of fifteen, quickly becoming a pioneering professional skateboarder and surfer who helped define the sport’s modern aesthetic. By nineteen he was the highest‑ranked skateboarder in the world, and his partnership with George Powell gave rise to Powell Peralta, a brand that dominated the 1980s skate market and fostered the iconic Bones Brigade, a roster that included Tony Hawk, Rodney Mullen, and Steve Caballero. Peralta’s impact extended beyond the pavement; in 1984 he directed and produced The Bones Brigade Video Show, recognized as the first full‑length skate video and a blueprint for future skate‑boarding media.
Transitioning to film in the late 1980s, he served as second‑unit director and skating technical advisor on Gleaming the Cube (1989) and appeared briefly in Real Genius (1985). His 2001 documentary Dogtown and Z‑Boys—co‑written with Craig Stecyk III—won both Director’s and Audience Awards at Sundance, cementing his reputation as a storyteller of subculture. Subsequent works such as Riding Giants (2004), Lords of Dogtown (2005), and Crips and Bloods: Made in America (2008) displayed his range, tackling everything from big‑wave surfing to urban gang history. In addition to feature films, Peralta produced the 2012 Bones Brigade: An Autobiography and directed the controversial “Whopper Virgin” Burger King commercials in 2008, which sparked debate over the use of indigenous participants.
Beyond his professional achievements, Peralta’s personal life includes two marriages—first to Joni Caldwell (1989‑1990) and later to Gemma Vizor (since 2001)—and two children, the late jazz pianist Austin Peralta and a second child whose name remains private. Continuing to work as a director, producer, and entrepreneur, Peralta remains active in the creative industry to this day, influencing new generations of skateboarders, surfers, and filmmakers.
