Sebastián Cordero

Sebastián Cordero Espinosa (born 23 May 1972 in Quito, Ecuador) is an Ecuadorian film director, screenwriter and editor whose career has been marked by a relentless pursuit of authentic storytelling and a pioneering spirit in a country with a nascent film industry. From the moment he watched Raiders of the Lost Ark at age nine, Cordero dreamed of making movies, a passion that led him to study film and scriptwriting at the University of Southern California. After graduating, he returned to Ecuador, determined to create cinema that reflected the social realities of his homeland. His debut feature, Ratas, Ratones, Rateros (1999), painted a stark portrait of poverty‑stricken life in Ecuador and earned a place at the Venice Film Festival, subsequently touring Toronto, San Sebastián, Buenos Aires and winning awards in Huelva and Havana. This early success positioned Cordero as a visionary voice capable of bridging local narratives with international appeal. The film’s raw energy and unflinching realism attracted global attention, establishing a foundation for his burgeoning reputation.
