Sebastian Schipper is a German actor and filmmaker born on 8 May 1968 in Hanover, West Germany. He began his artistic training at the Otto Falckenberg School of the Performing Arts in Munich, where he studied acting from 1992 until 1995, honing a craft that would later allow him to oscillate between front‑of‑camera performances and behind‑the‑camera storytelling. Schipper’s first screen appearance came in Sönke Wortmann’s Little Sharks (1992), launching a versatile acting career that included memorable supporting roles in cult classics such as Run Lola Run (1998) and an uncredited part in the Academy Award‑winning The English Patient (1996). Throughout the late 1990s and early 2000s he accumulated a diverse filmography, appearing in German television movies, crime series like Tatort, and international productions, demonstrating a talent for inhabiting both gritty urban characters and period pieces. In 1999 Schipper transitioned to directing with Absolute Giganten, a road‑movie that earned the second‑place prize at the German Film Awards for Best Fiction Film and signaled his emergence as a serious auteur. The film was co‑produced by Tom Tykwer, a partnership that would later see Schipper cast in several of Tykwer’s projects, reinforcing his reputation as a collaborative artist. His 2009 film Sometime in August loosely adapted Goethe’s Elective Affinities, showcasing his interest in literary reinterpretation and complex human relationships. The breakthrough came with Victoria (2015), a daring one‑take thriller set in a Berlin nightclub; the film premiered at the 65th Berlin International Film Festival and swept six categories at the 2015 German Film Awards, including Best Film and Best Direction, cementing Schipper’s status as a visionary filmmaker.
