What's After the Movie
Scott Frank is an American film director, producer, screenwriter, and author whose career spans over four decades. Born on March 10, 1960, in Fort Walton Beach, Florida, to a Jewish family, he moved to Los Gatos, California, where his father worked as a Pan Am pilot. Frank earned a B.A. in film studies from the University of California, Santa Barbara in 1982 and later completed an MFA at the American Film Institute. While still a student, he conceived the story that would become Little Man Tate, and after graduation he survived a period of bartending while selling his scripts, eventually landing a job at Paramount Pictures in 1984. His first produced screenplay was the 1987 film Plain Clothes, which he later dismissed as “terrible,” but it opened the door to a prolific period of writing for films such as Dead Again, Malice, and the celebrated Get Shorty, which earned him his first major award nominations. The success of Get Shorty reignited his passion for screenwriting and led to collaborations with directors like Steven Soderbergh on Out of Sight, a film that garnered him an Academy Award nomination, a Writers Guild win, and an Edgar Award. Transitioning behind the camera, Frank made his directorial debut with the tense thriller The Lookout in 2007, a project he had nurtured since 1998 and for which he received the Independent Spirit Award for Best First Feature. He followed with A Walk Among the Tombstones (2014) and entered the superhero arena with The Wolverine (2013) and the critically acclaimed Logan (2017), the latter earning him a second Oscar nomination. In recent years Frank has excelled in limited‑series storytelling, writing and directing Netflix’s Godless and the award‑winning adaptation The Queen’s Gambit, which won him a 2021 Emmy for Outstanding Directing. His body of work also includes uncredited rewrites on blockbuster films such as Saving Private Ryan and Gravity, and he published his first novel, Shaker, in 2016. By 2024 Frank had contributed to nearly sixty films, showcasing a versatility that spans crime dramas, science‑fiction epics, and character‑driven television, cementing his reputation as one of Hollywood’s most adaptable and respected storytellers.
