What's After the Movie
Roy Andersson is a Swedish film director whose work is instantly recognizable for its stark, absurdist humor and meticulously composed tableaux. Born Roy Arne Lennart Andersson on 31 March 1943 in Gothenburg, he first studied literature and philosophy before enrolling at the Swedish Film Institute Film School in 1967. His debut feature A Swedish Love Story (1969) earned multiple Berlin Festival awards and established him as a fresh voice, yet the sudden success plunged him into a deep depression that halted his early career. After the commercial and critical failure of Giliap (1975), Andersson retreated from feature filmmaking for 25 years, devoting his talents to directing over four hundred television commercials and refining the dead‑pan visual style that would later define his masterpieces. Returning to the screen in 2000, Andersson surprised the world with Songs from the Second Floor, a film built from forty‑six long, static tableaux that won the Cannes Jury Prize and numerous Guldbagge Awards. He followed this with You, the Living (2007), a contemplative series of vignettes that secured the Nordic Council Film Prize, and the internationally acclaimed A Pigeon Sat on a Branch Reflecting on Existence (2014), which earned the Golden Lion at Venice, making him the first Swede to receive the honor. His most recent work, About Endlessness (2019), continued his exploration of human frailty, winning the Silver Lion. Throughout his career Andersson has cited Italian neorealism, the Czech New Wave, Goya, Bruegel, Fellini and Jacques Tati as influences, and his films are celebrated for their philosophical depth, meticulous set design, and hauntingly comic view of everyday existence.
