Rainer Sarnet

Rainer Sarnet was born on 3 March 1969 in the historic town of Rakvere, Estonia, where an early fascination with animation and literature set the foundation for a career that would blend visual experimentation with narrative depth. After completing secondary school, he enrolled at the Baltic Film and Media School of Tallinn University, studying film direction under mentors who encouraged a rigorous approach to both theory and practice. During his student years, Sarnet honed his craft as an animator and directed numerous television commercials, experiences that later scholars credit for the kinetic energy and meticulous composition evident in his later works. His first feature, Where Souls Go (2007), announced a preoccupation with spiritual and existential themes, while his audacious adaptation of Dostoevsky’s The Idiot (2011) transplanted classic literature into a contemporary Estonian setting, earning a slot in the Tallinn Black Nights EurAsia competition. The director’s international breakthrough arrived with the stark black‑and‑white folk‑horror November (2017), adapted from Andrus Kivirähk’s novel, a film that premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival and secured the Best Cinematography award for Mart Taniel, as well as Estonia’s submission for the 90th Academy Awards. Building on this momentum, Sarnet ventured into docu‑fiction with The Diary of Vaino Vahing (2021), a hybrid portrait of a literary figure that garnered critical praise at the Tallinn Black Nights Baltic competition. His most recent venture, The Invisible Fight (2023), blends kung‑fu choreography, heavy‑metal soundtrack, and Orthodox mysticism, debuting in competition at the Locarno Film Festival and winning Best Film at the 2024 Estonian Film and Television Awards. Parallel to his screen work, Sarnet has staged provocative productions at Tallinn’s Von Krahl Theatre, including adaptations of Stanisław Przybyszewski’s Snow and Elfriede Jelinek’s sequel to A Doll’s House, demonstrating a versatile artistic vision that continues to shape contemporary Estonian cinema.
