What's After the Movie
Philippe Garrel, born on April 6, 1948, is a versatile and accomplished persona in the world of French cinema known for his multiple roles as director, cinematographer, screenwriter, film editor, and producer. He's closely associated with the French New Wave movement and his contributions have seen him achieve recognition at major international stages such as Cannes Film Festival, Venice Film Festival, and Berlin Film Festival.
Born in Boulogne-Billancourt in 1948, he started his career early, sparked by a keen interest in film influenced by the pioneering work of Jean-Luc Godard and François Truffaut. His first directorial venture was at the tender age of 16 with the film Les Enfants désaccordés in 1964. Garrel's tenacity has seen him amass significant accreditations, including winning the Prix Jean Vigo for the film L'Enfant secret and scoring several nominations and wins at the Venice Film Festival for his remarkable films. His 2005 film, Les Amants réguliers, further solidified his position in the industry, earning him the Silver Lion for Best Director.
His personal life has been just as intriguing. He met German singer and actress Nico in 1969 and their decade-long relationship had significant influence on his film work. Garrel cast Nico in many of his movies, starting from his 1972 film La Cicatrice intérieure. Furthermore, he has two children from his marriage with actress Brigitte Sy, who are actors Louis Garrel and Esther Garrel. He is currently married to actress-writer Caroline Deruas. Sadly, Garrel faced negative publicity when accused of sexual harassment by five actresses in 2023.
