Phil Nibbelink

Phil Nibbelink is an American animator, film director, comic‑book writer and illustrator whose career spans over four decades of groundbreaking animation. Born on June 3 1955, Nibbelink began his professional journey at Walt Disney Studios in the early 1980s, contributing as a character animator on classics such as The Fox and the Hound (1981), The Black Cauldron (1985) and The Great Mouse Detective (1986). His talent soon earned him a pivotal role as a directing animator on the Academy‑Award‑winning Who Framed Roger Rabbit (1988), where his blend of hand‑drawn skill and emerging computer techniques set new industry standards. After a ten‑year stint at Disney, Nibbelink joined Amblimation, the short‑lived studio founded by Steven Spielberg, where he served as animation director on Casper (1995) and co‑directed the beloved sequel An American Tail: Fievel Goes West (1991) alongside Simon Wells. He also directed the whimsical dinosaur adventure We’re Back! A Dinosaur’s Story (1993), a project that briefly intersected with the planned but cancelled Balto co‑direction. When Amblimation closed in 1997, Nibbelink pivoted to independent filmmaking, founding Phil Nibbelink Productions and personally overseeing the creation of Puss in Boots (1999) and Romeo & Juliet: Sealed with a Kiss (2006), where he wore every hat from director to songwriter. In recent years Nibbelink has continued to lend his expertise as a storyboard artist and set designer on titles such as The Swan Princess series (2023) and the Wolverine and the X‑Men animated series (2008‑2009). His enduring passion for animation, combined with a willingness to experiment across media, makes him a respected figure whose influence is felt in both mainstream and independent circles.
