Peter Sollett

Peter Sollett is an American filmmaker whose work often captures the gritty yet tender nuances of New York City adolescence. Born on February 9, 1976, in the Bensonhurst neighborhood of Brooklyn, he grew up in a culturally rich, predominantly Italian‑Jewish community that would later inform much of his storytelling. His father, a newspaper photographer, sparked Sollett’s fascination with the camera, leading him to pursue film studies at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts where he created his acclaimed thesis short Five Feet High and Rising. The 26‑minute film not only garnered awards at Sundance, Cannes and SXSW but also laid the groundwork for his first feature, Raising Victor Vargas (2002), a naturalistic drama that earned three Independent Spirit Award nominations and cemented his reputation for improvisational direction.
