What's After the Movie

Peter Sollett

Peter Sollett is an American filmmaker whose work often captures the gritty yet tender nuances of New York City adolescence. Born on February 9, 1976, in the Bensonhurst neighborhood of Brooklyn, he grew up in a culturally rich, predominantly Italian‑Jewish community that would later inform much of his storytelling. His father, a newspaper photographer, sparked Sollett’s fascination with the camera, leading him to pursue film studies at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts where he created his acclaimed thesis short Five Feet High and Rising. The 26‑minute film not only garnered awards at Sundance, Cannes and SXSW but also laid the groundwork for his first feature, Raising Victor Vargas (2002), a naturalistic drama that earned three Independent Spirit Award nominations and cemented his reputation for improvisational direction. In 2008, Sollett directed Nick & Norah’s Infinite Playlist, adapting Lorene Scafaria’s screenplay and infusing the night‑long Manhattan adventure with personal touches such as Katz’s Deli and the Mercury Lounge, underscoring his deep connection to the city’s urban landscape. Beyond his feature work, Sollett has contributed to projects like Freeheld (2015) and Metal Lords (2022), demonstrated his versatility in short‑form cinema, and briefly entered the conversation around a Minecraft adaptation before being replaced in 2022. An educator at Columbia University’s School of the Arts and later at USC’s School of Cinematic Arts, he shares his industry experience with emerging talent. Influenced by auteurs such as François Truffaut, John Cassavetes, Federico Fellini, Martin Scorsese and Ingmar Bergman, Sollett’s filmic voice blends classic storytelling with contemporary urban realism, making him a distinctive figure in modern American cinema.
