Pernille Fischer Christensen

Pernille Fischer Christensen, born on 24 December 1969 in Denmark, is a distinguished Danish film director, screenwriter, and occasional actress whose work has consistently pushed the boundaries of contemporary European cinema. Growing up as the older sister of actress Stine Fischer Christensen, she entered the film industry at the age of twenty, working as an assistant to Tómas Gislason, a close collaborator of Lars von Trier, an experience that immersed her in avant‑garde discussions and honed her cinematic sensibilities. In 1993 she enrolled at The European Film College, where she forged a pivotal partnership with fellow filmmaker Nanna Arnfred, and later graduated from the National Film School of Denmark in 1999 with her short film India, a project that earned the Cinéfondations 3rd Prize at Cannes and signaled her emerging talent. Her early career also includes the award‑winning short Habibti My Love (2002), which secured a Robert for best short subject in 2003, further cementing her reputation for nuanced storytelling. Christensen’s breakthrough feature, En Soap (2006), co‑written with Kim Fupz Aakeson, explores the complex relationship between a beauty‑shop owner and a trans‑sexual tenant, starring Trine Dyrholm and David Dencik; the film premiered at the Berlin International Film Festival, won the prestigious Silver Bear Jury Grand Prix, and became the inaugural recipient of the Best First Feature Award, alongside multiple Bodil and Robert nominations. She continued to collaborate with Aakeson on Dancers (2008), again featuring Dyrholm, and received critical anticipation as one of Denmark’s most expected releases.
