Percy Adlon

Percy Adlon, born Paul Rudolf Parsifal Adlon on 1 June 1935 in Munich, then part of Nazi Germany, was a prolific German filmmaker renowned for his vivid storytelling, strong female protagonists and compassionate portrayals of LGBTQ relationships. Coming from a distinguished lineage—great‑grandson of hotel magnate Lorenz Adlon and grandson of Louis Adlon Sr.—he grew up in the scenic Ammerland near Starnberger See and studied art, theater history and German literature at Ludwig‑Maximilian University while also taking acting and singing classes. His early career unfolded in radio and television, where he worked as a narrator, editor and voice‑over actor for a decade before venturing into documentary filmmaking, producing more than 150 shorts that explored art and the human condition.

Adlon’s breakthrough came with his first feature Céleste (1980), a delicate portrait of Marcel Proust’s cook, but it was the whimsical desert‑set cult classic Bagdad Cafe (1987) that earned him international acclaim, garnering praise from Roger Ebert and a place among Akira Kurosawa’s favorite films. Subsequent works such as Rosalie Goes Shopping (1989), Salmonberries (1991) and Younger and Younger (1993) continued his exploration of cultural identity, consumerism and unconventional families, often blending comedy, fantasy and social commentary. In later years he co‑directed Mahler on the Couch (2010) with his son Felix, and produced his son’s romance Eat Your Heart Out (1997). Throughout a career spanning from 1975 to 2024, Adlon remained a distinctive voice in the New German Cinema movement, celebrated for his lyrical visual style, empathetic character work and the ability to bridge European art‑house sensibilities with American popular appeal. He lived his final years in Pacific Palisades, California, where he continued to mentor emerging filmmakers until his death on 10 March 2024 at the age of 88.
