Paul Tibbitt

Paul Harrison Tibbitt IV is an American animator, writer, and voice actor best known for his extensive work on the iconic Nickelodeon series SpongeBob SquarePants. Born on May 13, 1968 in Los Angeles County, California, Tibbitt pursued formal training in character animation at the California Institute of the Arts, where he honed the skills that would later define his career in television and film. After graduating, he joined Nickelodeon Animation Studio in the late 1990s, initially contributing as a storyboard artist and writer on SpongeBob, quickly rising through the ranks due to his sharp comedic timing and visual storytelling ability. In 2004, following the resignation of series creator Stephen Hillenburg, Tibbitt assumed the role of showrunner, overseeing the show's fourth through ninth seasons and guiding its evolution while maintaining the whimsical spirit that endeared it to global audiences. During his tenure, he also lent his voice to the character Potty the Parrot, stepping into a role previously voiced by Hillenburg and adding a distinctive flair to the series' supporting cast. Tibbitt's creative leadership extended beyond television when he made his feature‑film directorial debut with The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water (2015), a project that showcased his ability to translate the series' off‑beat humor to the big screen and earned commercial success worldwide. In 2015, he transitioned out of daily production on the series, passing the supervising producer and showrunner responsibilities to Vincent Waller and Marc Ceccarelli, while continuing to collaborate on subsequent SpongeBob films, including providing direction and writing support for The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run. Since 2016, Tibbitt has been affiliated with DreamWorks Animation, applying his expertise to new animated projects and further cementing his reputation as a versatile and influential figure in contemporary animation.
