Paul Grimault

Paul Grimault (23 March 1905 – 29 March 1994) was a seminal figure in French animation, renowned for his lyrical and satirical storytelling style that combined delicate hand‑drawn lines with a profound social conscience. Born in Neuilly‑sur‑Seine near Paris, Grimault entered the world of cinema in the mid‑1930s, creating his first experimental short Monsieur Pipe fait de la peinture while still a student, and quickly co‑founded the studio Les Gémeaux with André Sarrut in 1936. This studio became the second major French animation house after Émile Cohl and produced a string of celebrated shorts such as Le messager de la lumière (1938) and La Légende de la soie (1950), securing Grimault a reputation for inventive visual humor and poetic narratives. During World War II, the absence of American productions gave Grimault’s works a captive French audience, allowing him to experiment with propaganda‑aware pieces for the agit‑prop collective Groupe Octobre, where he met poet Jacques Prévert. Their collaboration culminated in Grimault’s magnum opus, Le Roi et l’oiseau (The King and the Mockingbird), a project that began as La Bergère et le Ramoneur in 1948, was halted in 1952 after a dispute with Sarrut, and finally resurrected in 1967 to be completed in 1980 under the new title. The film’s intricate blend of fantastical imagery, political allegory, and musical rhythm earned it the 1979 Louis Delluc Prize and a lasting influence on future animators, including Hayao Miyazaki. Grimault continued to nurture the animated medium through the 1970s and 1980s, producing commercial pieces, television pilots, and the retrospective anthology La Table tournante (1988) with Jacques Demy, which gathered his most celebrated shorts. He remained active until his death in Le Mesnil‑Saint‑Denis in 1994, leaving behind an enduring legacy that reshaped French cinema and inspired generations of artists worldwide.
