Norman Lee (1914‑1978) was an American songwriter, jazz clarinetist, and big‑band singer whose career spanned the golden era of swing and the early days of rock‑&‑roll. Born on 1914‑07‑10 in Dallas, Texas, Lee showed an early talent for wind instruments, mastering the clarinet while still a teenager. By the early 1930s he was performing in local nightclubs, quickly gaining a reputation for his smooth tone and charismatic stage presence. In 1935 he formed Norman Lee and His Orchestra, a dance‑band that blended the sophisticated arrangements of the big‑band era with the rhythmic vitality of Texas swing. The group recorded several regional hits, most notably “Rain” and “Southern Breeze,” which received extensive airplay on Southern radio stations and cemented Lee’s status as a leading bandleader of the period. Throughout the 1940s and 1950s he toured extensively, sharing stages with the likes of Duke Ellington and Glenn Miller, while also penning songs for other performers; his compositions were praised for their lyrical elegance and inventive harmonic structures. By the late 1960s, although the popularity of big‑band music waned, Lee continued to record and perform, adapting his style to incorporate emerging pop sensibilities, which allowed him to remain relevant into the early 1970s.
