Michel Soutter

Michel Soutter (born 2 June 1932 in Geneva, Switzerland, died 10 September 1991 in the same city) was a seminal figure in Swiss cinema, renowned for his innovative direction and incisive screenwriting. Over a career that spanned from 1967 to 1991, Soutter crafted a total of thirteen feature films that explored social dynamics, personal identity, and the tensions of modern life, often blending realism with a subtle poetic sensibility. His debut, La lune avec les dents (1967), announced a fresh voice eager to challenge conventional narrative structures, while Haschisch (1968) and La pomme (1969) continued to develop his reputation as a daring experimenter with form and content. The early 1970s saw a prolific period with titles such as James ou pas (1970), Les nénuphars (1972), and Les arpenteurs (1972), each reflecting a deepening engagement with character-driven storytelling and a nuanced critique of Swiss societal norms. In 1973 he released Ce Schubert qui décoiffe, a film noted for its inventive use of music and rhythm, followed by L'escapade (1974) and Repérages (1977), which cemented his status among the New Swiss Cinema movement. Perhaps his most internationally recognized work, L'amour des femmes (1982), was selected for competition at the 32nd Berlin International Film Festival, highlighting his ability to resonate beyond national borders. Subsequent projects like Adam et Ève (1983), Signé Renart (1984), and his final documentary Le film du cinéma suisse (1991) demonstrated a lifelong commitment to exploring the cinematic medium itself.
