Michael Epstein

Michael Anthony Epstein (30 June 1921 – 10 March 2024) was a British virologist best known for co‑discovering the Epstein‑Barr virus, the first human herpesvirus identified and the cause of infectious mononucleosis. Born in London, England, he pursued medical studies at University College London and later earned a PhD in pathology, laying the scientific foundation for a career that would span more than seven decades. After serving in the Royal Army Medical Corps during World War II, Epstein joined the National Institute for Medical Research, where his work on tumor viruses led to the seminal 1964 paper describing the virus now bearing his name. The discovery not only transformed understanding of viral oncology but also opened new avenues for vaccine development and cancer research, earning him international acclaim. In 1972 he was elected Fellow of the Royal Society and received numerous awards, including the prestigious Gairdner Foundation International Award. Knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 1992, Sir Michael Epstein continued to mentor young scientists, publishing over 200 peer‑reviewed articles and authoring several influential textbooks on virology. His leadership roles at the Institute of Cancer Research and later at the Institute of Immunology cemented his reputation as a visionary administrator who championed interdisciplinary collaboration. Even after officially retiring in the early 2000s, he remained active in advisory capacities, contributing to public health policy discussions on viral diseases.
